Disaster Recovery Planning: Prepare for Fall Storm Season

A major storm can disrupt thousands of businesses and upend an entire community. For your bank or credit union, the pressure starts quickly. Customers need access to their money at the same time your employees may be dealing with damaged roads, power loss, closed facilities, or problems at home.

Storms do not follow a financial institution’s calendar, and some of the most destructive events have arrived during the fall. Regulators have expectations as well. Weak preparation can contribute to poor examination results, fines, or higher FDIC insurance costs. You have to keep critical services available while managing real constraints on people, facilities, and technology.

That is why bank disaster recovery belongs inside a working business continuity program. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) expects financial institutions to maintain business continuity and disaster recovery procedures they can carry out when operations are interrupted. Those plans have to coordinate people, processes, and technology. A document alone cannot restore a server, reach an employee, or tell you which service comes back first.

The work is demanding for smaller community financial institutions. Your staff members already carry several responsibilities, and the same people needed to build the plan often have to keep daily operations moving. Preparation still matters. When your plan is current and tested, an outage can remain temporary. When recovery gaps stay hidden, you and your community carry the consequences.

Preparing for Fall Storms

A business continuity plan and related disaster recovery procedures provide the foundation. Before storm season, you should also check the details that determine whether those plans will work:

  • Evaluate all backups. Confirm that redundant equipment needed for recovery is current, available, and working.
  • Use uninterruptible power supplies for short power interruptions. If an extended outage is likely, shut down servers and other IT equipment in a controlled way.
  • Secure the server room with separate key access. Protect equipment and sensitive documents if the facility must remain vacant for an extended period.
  • Test the procedures in the business continuity and disaster recovery plans through functional exercises. A test can expose missing dependencies that are easy to overlook on paper.
  • Make sure your employees, vendors, and customers know the appropriate contacts and communication protocols. During an outage, unclear communication creates another operational problem.

Common Recovery Gaps

If you manage backups, email, servers, and other technology internally, you can get pulled into immediate operational work. Disaster planning then competes with the issues already on your day’s list. The result may be a plan that misses part of how your institution operates or depends on assumptions no one has tested.

Those gaps can remain invisible until a functional exercise or a real disruption. A backup may exist but take too long to restore. A critical process may depend on one employee or one vendor contact. Recovery instructions may not reflect changes made since the last review.

An IT service provider with experience in community financial institutions can add capacity and help you examine those details. The provider should understand regulatory expectations and the operational reality of restoring banking services after a natural disaster.

When evaluating that support, look for capabilities tied to the work you’ll need during an interruption:

  • Annual recovery plan testing that exercises the plan rather than only reviewing it.
  • Remote, secure backups that remain available when the primary facility or systems are not.
  • Data recovery practices that address regulatory requirements and the institution’s recovery priorities.
  • Staff and engineers who can respond when internal teams are managing the broader effect of the event.
  • Proactive communication before, during, and after recovery work.

Fall storms and other natural disasters cannot be prevented. You can still decide how your institution will respond. Knowing where people should go, who has authority to act, how communication will work, and which critical functions come back first gives your team a usable starting point when conditions are changing fast. Build those decisions into your business continuity plan, test the recovery procedures, and keep both current as systems and responsibilities change.
